Tailor and co-founder, The Anthology

Learning and unlearning from classics to make things modern,” is the unwavering motto of Buzz Tang, the “artistic storyteller” of Hong Kong-based sartorial brand The Anthology.

After graduating from the London College of Fashion with a degree in footwear design and moonlighting as a fabric merchant on Savile Row, Tang co-founded The Anthology with his business partner Andy Chong, intending to make tailoring more relevant to a new generation of consumers and change its stuffy and conservative image.

“We’re an open book,” says Tang. “We try to be as transparent as we can. The image of tailoring over the last decades was so unwelcoming and unapproachable – it’s partially losing its dialect because the previous big-wigs failed to pass on the spirit to the next generation.”

So what makes The Anthology different? “We have a clear roadmap for those who are interested in tailoring, whether a customer or a maker,” Tang explains, adding that the brand’s aesthetics are engineered in a way that’s both relevant and relatable. The signature deconstructed Lazyman Jacket, for example, is designed as a fresh alternative to a work blazer or sports jacket. Most recently, The Anthology introduced a series of knitted T-shirts, which, like gloves, perfectly fit their wearers’ frames should they decide to spend an afternoon at the beach or in the park.

Tang and his subtle yet substantial innovations in tailoring haven’t gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, British actor Bill Nighy wore bespoke suits by The Anthology to the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Academy Awards. Turns out the dapper dandy himself has been something of a devoted customer.

“We managed to dress the most quintessentially English person, who’s famous for dressing in the finest tailoring, in a suit proudly handcrafted in Asia by Asians,” says Tang. “My pride lies not in having someone wearing our garments on the red carpet, but in the ulterior message it conveys to the world.”
