Christy Chan opened Maison Muguet to bring her distinctive curatorial style to Hong Kong’s rather impersonal fashion scene by selecting only pieces that speak to modern women like herself. And what might that look like? We find out from the fashion maven herself.
What inspired you to start Maison Muguet?
Hong Kong’s fashion scene is pretty much dominated by either luxury brands or fast-fashion brands. I realise everyone wears the same things and there aren’t enough unique designs that speak to each person’s individuality, so when the right time came, I just followed my heart. I created a platform where customers can find high-quality niche designs from different cultural backgrounds from all over the world.
Which brand did you recently discover that you’re really excited about?
Monies from Copenhagen. Their jewellery is artistic and elegant, and so bold and unapologetically chic. They make great pieces for the modern woman.
Describe a style uniform we’d likely find you in.
Right now, you’ll find me in a leather jacket with wide-leg pants, or dresses paired with The Row bag and sneakers. In the summer, I was wearing oversized shirts with high-waisted straight-leg pants, and summer dresses with flat strappy sandals.
Who is Maison Muguet is made for?
The woman who’s confident and elegant, with a dash of daring. She appreciates good quality and has her own style. She’s sophisticated, interesting and curious about the world.
What essential fashion item can’t you live without?
A good pair of jeans. I think it’s the ultimate, effortlessly chic fashion item.
Which fashion show were you most impressed with this season?
Schiaparelli – it’s otherworldly, original and sophisticated. I’m bewildered by his world.
Who are your greatest fashion inspirations?
Designers Like Phoebe Philo and Elsa Peretti. Models like Kendall Jenner. Muses like Jackie O. Even television and movie characters inspire me, like Rachel Green and Miranda Priestly. Editors like Emmanuelle Alt … the list can go on!
If you only get to save one collection, would it be your shoes or your bags?
That’s a tough question. My bags, I guess – because a lot of them I can’t buy back.
What’s your favourite piece of jewellery you own?
Right now, it’s my Audemars Piguet watch. It’s not a girly watch; I love it because it’s sassy, bold and makes me feel powerful.
Which up-and-coming jewellery designer do you have your eye on to bring to Maison Muguet?
By Pariah. It’s sophisticated and I like its understated elegance. I’m also planning to bring in more fine-jewellery brands to Maison Muguet. It’s super exciting to build this new sector, and there are so many good fine-jewellery brands out there.
You’re also a terrific cook. Which recipe are you making the most this autumn season?
Aw, thank you! It makes me smile when I see this question. Bouillabaisse and oeufs en meurette. They’re heartwarming and flavourful, perfect for autumn.
If you weren’t in Hong Kong, which city would you want to live in?
Paris. It’s intimate and sophisticated. I love a walkable city, especially one with water. Apart from its rich heritage and art collections, Paris is also the capital of fashion and gastronomy. What’s not to love?
