Anne Wang Liu moves easily in front of the camera. The glamorous socialite and philanthropist is a familiar face on the Hong Kong social circuit and in the pages of magazines. But surprisingly, her daughter Madeleine Liu, a freshman at New York University, is just as confident, self-assuredly striking one pose after the other. “She’s a natural,” Wang Liu says, proudly, as she looks on. “Being able to embark on our first photoshoot together is a very special experience, and it’ll be a memory we’ll both cherish.”
On the shoot, mother and daughter are both surrounded by fabulous jewels from
the most exclusive maisons – Boghossian, Buccellati, Bvlgari, Cartier, Damiani, Dior, Qeelin and Tiffany & Co all brought out their finest pieces to drape around the duo.
“With Madeleine studying abroad we have fewer opportunities to spend time together,” says Wang Liu. “This being our first mother-daughter shoot makes it especially meaningful and I’m most excited that we’ll have beautiful images to capture this wonderful moment.”
Anne, have you passed on your love of jewellery to your daughter?
I think Madeleine has grown to appreciate jewellery. As she’s grown older her personal sense of style has evolved, and I can see her favouring pieces that transcend trends, with meticulous attention to detail. We appreciate jewellery not just for its aesthetic allure
but for the stories it tells. She’s learned to appreciate the artistry behind every piece and the personal significance that each piece may carry.
Madeleine, are there any pieces in your mother’s jewellery box you love?
My mother had a rose-gold necklace custom-made with my name on it. She wore it every day for many years when I was younger. I love it for its sentimental value and timelessness. She had a matching one made when my sister Audrey was born, so that we feel close to her no matter where we are. This necklace’s simplicity is its greatest charm. Its delicate design makes it suitable for any occasion.
Anne, you’re a well-known philanthropist and have been such a key supporter of Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre. Do you think you’re a role model to your daughters?
I’m a long-time supporter of Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre and I’m committed to alleviating the burden on cancer patients through compassion. I’ve endeavoured to teach my daughters that making an impact reaches far beyond financial contributions, but also requires empathy and profound commitment. I hope I’ve fostered in them a want and dedication to support those in need and cultivated a sense of purpose. My wish is for them to find causes they feel passionate about and to dedicate their time to championing them; to lead with kindness to improve the lives of others.
Madeleine, how does your mother inspire you?
My mother inspires me in a multitude of ways, her unwavering kindness and generosity among them. I see how much effort she puts into projects she’s involved in, and it inspires me to work harder. Her dedication to family, friends and her daughters is something I truly admire. I hope I’ve inherited some of her attention to detail, resilience and positive attitude.
Her influence has shaped the person I am today, and I aspire to carry forward the values and qualities she’s instilled in me.
