Chung Hang Leung

Actor

One of Hong Kong’s most exciting rising actors, Leung Chung Hang’s roots are on stage: he graduated with top grades from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2016, then dived head-first into theatre productions. But it wasn’t long before Leung’s love for performing took him away from the stage and on to the screen.

“I’m different from most other actors, because I like taking part in both theatre plays and films,” he says. “I try to work in both worlds. I haven’t really thought about shaking up the entertainment industry, but I hope I can make it to the top in both fields one day.”

In 2017, he made his television debut with RTHK’s Below the Lion Rock, followed the next year by Big Brother, then A Home with a View and Obsessions in 2019, and, in 2020, season seven
of A Wall-less World.

“My acting career began in theatre, so when I eventually made the transition to movies, it felt like I had to start from zero again,” says Leung. “The methods, techniques and approaches to the two media are vastly different, so I had to learn many new things from scratch and adapt to this new environment, despite my ample experience with performing on stage.”

But more than just adapting, he flourished. In 2021, his big break came when he took on the lead role for Zero to Hero, a film based on the story of the Hong Kong Paralympian gold-medallist So Wa-Wai, often referred to as “Wonder Boy”. After the film’s release, to critical acclaim, in 2022 Leung was nominated for Best Actor and Best New Performer at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards.

Although his film career is at a relatively early stage, his success has led him to set greater goals for the future; he now hopes to expand his horizons beyond Hong Kong, to audiences in Taiwan and Japan.
